Ohio’s Columbus Symphony Orchestra has announced details of its sixtieth season, which will open on October 1 with an all-Beethoven program featuring the Sixth Symphony and the Violin Concerto, with violinist Augustin Hadelich. The twelve-week season at the Ohio Theatre will also include a five-week Mid-Winter Russian Masters Festival, with works including Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with soloist Vladimir Feltsman; Stravinsky’s Petrouchka; and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 (“The Year 1905”). The Columbus Symphony Chorus will perform with the orchestra in two performances of Handel’s Messiah and three performances of the Verdi Requiem. The orchestra does not currently have a music director; conductors in the upcoming season will include Mei-Ann Chen, Enrique Arturo Diemecke, Günther Herbig, Ronald J. Jenkins, Larry Rachleff, Peter Stafford Wilson, and Jean-Marie Zeitouni. The orchestra plans to announce expanded new-media offerings in the 2010-11 season, with additional features to be added to its free iPhone app, introduced in November 2009. Columbus will continue to offer post-concert streaming audio of its performances and will make select performances available for download to mp3 players and other handheld devices.
