Staffers at seven orchestras have been selected to participate in the American Express Nonprofit Leadership Academy from April 26 to 30, 2010. Launched in 2008, the academy is a free week-long training program run in partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership; it immerses participants in sessions with American Express senior executives about career development, business strategy, brand management, and marketing. This year, American Express asked the League of American Orchestras to invite its members to nominate staffers to participate. The class, which includes 48 emerging leaders from community, environmental, international relief, and cultural organizations, includes Carolyn Nishon, director of artistic operations, Portland (Maine) Symphony; Nick Adams, director of operations, Nashua Symphony; Laura Connelly, director of presentations, Los Angeles Philharmonic; David Filner, vice president and general manager, San Antonio Symphony; Alexis Alfaro, program and operations manager, San Diego Youth Symphony; Rika Dixon, marketing manager, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra; and Ahmad Mayes, director of operations and artistic administration, Youth Orchestra of San Antonio. Participants will receive follow-up support from CCL via online networking tools, telephone coaching sessions, leadership goal checkpoints, and a one-year review.
