In Thursday’s (2/25) San Francisco Chronicle, Joshua Kosman reports, “San Francisco Symphony music director Michael Tilson Thomas is among a handful of artists scheduled to receive the National Medal of Arts from President Obama at the White House today. The award, given annually to a select group of prominent creative figures—typically between eight and 12—is the nation’s highest award for artistic achievement. The presentation was planned for a morning ceremony in the East Room of the White House. Thomas was cited for his contributions to American culture. In addition to his San Francisco post, which he has held for 15 years, he is the founder and artistic director of the New World Symphony, the Miami training orchestra, as well as principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. … The names of his fellow winners were not available at press time.”
