For its upcoming performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7, the Houston Symphony will perform at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston, rather than at Jones Hall, its customary venue. The free concert, on March 11, represents only the second time the orchestra has performed at the cathedral; the first was in 2008 at the new cathedral’s opening ceremonies. Music Director Hans Graf said of the decision to perform the Bruckner at the cathedral, “Some music is transcendent, especially Bruckner’s symphonies, which seem to reach their full range of majestic beauty in the immensity of a sacral room—like in a cathedral.” Houston Symphony General Manager Steven Brosvik said in a statement that the concert was also an outgrowth of one of the orchestra’s main goals: to be “an exciting community partner by performing great music around the city.”
