In April, a chamber ensemble from California’s Santa Rosa Symphony will perform “Music at the Edge of Life: In Remembrance of Jewish Composers Who Perished in the Holocaust,” a program of music by Pavel Haas, Erwin Schulhoff (pictured), Hans Krasa, and Viktor Ullmann. The concert, at the Jackson Theater in Santa Rosa, will include Haas’s String Quartet No. 3, Schulhoff’s Concertino, Krasa’s Passacaglia and Fugue for Violin, Viola, and Cello, and Ullmann’s String Quartet No. 3; most of these works were written in concentration camps. Rabbi George Gittleman of Congregation Shomrei Torah in Santa Rosa will introduce the concert, which takes place the day before Holocaust Remembrance Day (April 11). There will also be a display in the Jackson Theater lobby by students from Sonoma Country Day School from their Tolerance study unit, and before and after the concert there will be screenings of a documentary featuring students from nearby Healdsburg Junior High School interviewing local residents who are Holocaust survivors or relatives of victims of the Holocaust.
