In Wednesday’s (3/17) Daily Press (Newport News, Virginia), David Nicholson writes, “The Virginia Symphony will participate in Orchestras Feeding America, a national food drive conducted by members of the League of American Orchestras in partnership with Feeding America. Locally, the orchestra will partner with Farm Fresh and the foodbanks of Southeastern Virginia and the Peninsula to collect non-perishable food items at its three concerts March 26-28. Foodbank bins will be placed in the lobby to collect the food. … ‘The length and severity of the economic downturn has impacted so many of our citizens in Hampton Roads and this food drive is another way we can give back to a community that has supported us for so many years,’ said Donna Hudgins, the symphony’s director of public relations. This is the second year that America’s orchestras have mobilized musicians, staff, volunteers and audiences to help alleviate hunger in communities across the country. The Virginia Symphony’s 2009 food drive collected 1,200 pounds of food for local foodbanks.”
