The Raleigh-based North Carolina Symphony has announced the appointment of ANDREW LOWY as principal clarinet, effective in September; he will succeed JIMMY GILMORE, who is retiring at the end of this season after 41 years in the post. Lowy holds a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College, where he studied music and linguistics, and is currently pursuing graduate studies at the University of Southern California. A native of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., he attended the Pre-College Division of Manhattan School of Music and performed in the New York City area with the Queens Symphony Orchestra and the Yonkers Philharmonic. Further orchestral experience includes appearances with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, and summer fellowships at Tanglewood Music Center and Music Academy of the West.
