Michigan’s Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra will welcome three conductors during its second biennial Conductors Festival, a workshop for up-and-coming conductors led by Music Director Raymond Harvey. During the week leading up to concerts on April 17 and 18, Harvey will provide instruction in conducting and rehearsal techniques to Alejandro Gutiérrez, music director of the University of Costa Rica Symphony Orchestra; Peter Szep, New York-based opera conductor and music director of the Raylynmor Opera Company in Keene, New Hampshire; and Ruben Capriles, director of orchestras at the Baltimore School of the Arts. The final concert program will feature three overtures: Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, led by Gutiérrez; Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, led by Szep; and Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, led by Capriles. Harvey will conduct Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 in the second half of that concert.
