In Wednesday’s (3/31) St. Paul Pioneer Press (Minnesota), Rob Hubbard writes, “If you weren’t able to catch any of the Minnesota Orchestra concerts featuring pianist Stephen Hough at the end of last season or the start of this one, you still have a chance to hear them … on CD. Each of the concerts at Minneapolis’ Orchestra Hall was recorded for planned release, and the strongest performances gleaned from those concerts go on sale on Thursday. The release is the first for conductor Osmo Vanska and the Minnesota Orchestra on England’s Hyperion label, and it features Peter Tchaikovsky’s complete works for piano and orchestra, including all three of his piano concertos, as well as his ‘Concert Fantasia.’ Also on the two-CD set are Hough’s arrangements of two brief Tchaikovsky works, and, for Tchaikovsky completists, two alternative versions of the second movement from his Piano Concerto No. 2. In addition to music retail Web sites and major downloading destinations, the CD is available at minnesotaorchestra.org.”
