In Sunday’s (4/4) St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Sarah Bryan Miller writes, “This weekend’s concerts by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra offer St. Louisans first crack at the two programs it’s taking on an intense five-day tour of California starting April 14, its first since 1999. Music director David Robertson will lead the orchestra and his brother-in-law, acclaimed violinist Gil Shaham, in music by Mozart, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Christopher Rouse and John Adams. They will perform in Los Angeles, Palm Desert, at the University of California-Davis and finish with two concerts in San Francisco. … California was chosen because ‘it’s a very music-rich state, with a number of world-class performing venues.’ The transportation is organized well enough that five concerts can be played in five days, which makes the trip financially feasible.” The orchestra will alternate two different programs. “In one, Rouse’s ‘Rapture’ acts as a bookend with Adams’ ‘Doctor Atomic’ Symphony in a program that also includes Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 7. In the other, Stravinsky and Mozart take turns: the former’s ‘Danses concertantes’ and Violin Concerto alternate with the latter’s Violin Concerto No. 2 and Symphony No. 36, ‘Linz.’ ”
