JOSEPH MECHAVICH has been named music director and principal conductor of Kentucky Opera in Louisville. His role will include programming, artist selection, and, when appropriate, taking the podium with the Louisville Orchestra. Mechavich’s previous posts include principal conductor of Opera Birmingham in Alabama; assistant conductor, chorus master, and coach, Minnesota Opera; director of music, Orlando Opera; and cover conductor, Santa Fe Opera. Mechavich has also led opera productions at Deutsche Oper Berlin, Aspen Music Festival and School, Washington (D.C.) National Opera, Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, Naples (Fla.) Philharmonic, and at opera companies in New York City, Des Moines, Dayton, Calgary, Salt Lake City, Richmond (Va.), Fargo (N.D.), Spokane, Austin, Mobile, New Orleans, and Reno. A native of Minnesota, he is a graduate of Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and the Yale University School of Music.
