In Thursday’s (4/15) San Jose Mercury News (California), Richard Scheinin writes, “The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music makes its annual return to Santa Cruz this summer, bringing a wave of orchestral works rarely, if ever, heard on the West Coast—or anywhere else, for that matter. And the composers—13 of them, including John Adams, Philip Glass and Jennifer Higdon, who this week won a Pulitzer Prize—have all promised to be there. Cabrillo’s 48th season unfolds Aug. 1-15. This will be its 19th under the direction of conductor Marin Alsop, who has done a lot to make what’s contemporary ‘cool.’ … The opening night concert, on Aug. 6, launches the festival proper with works by Michael Hersch (his Symphony No. 3, a world premiere commissioned by the festival), Mark-Anthony Turnage (‘Scherzoid’) and Higdon, whose ‘On a Wire’ (co-commissioned by Cabrillo) was composed for eighth blackbird and will feature the group as its ‘soloist.’ ” The August 7 and 8 programs feature the music of Anna Clyne and Nathaniel Stookey, and additional works by Higdon and Turnage. The second weekend features music by Adams, Glass, Pierre Jalbert, Elena Kats-Chernin, Kevin Puts, Michael Shapiro, and George Walker.
