The League of American Orchestras recently announced the four recipients of its Grants to Outstanding Women Conductors. They are Mihaela Cesa-Goje, Mei-Ann Chen, Alondra de la Parra, and Annunziata Tomaro. Grants of $10,000 are awarded to each recipient, to be used for expenses associated with activities outlined in their successful grant applications. The grants are given on a highly competitive basis to women conductors who are current members of the League and are committed to a career with American orchestras; they are intended for conductors ready for national and international recognition and for candidacy for top conducting posts. Mihaela Cesa-Goje is an advocate of new music and is also winner of the 2009 Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship; Mei-Ann Chen is the newly appointed music director of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and is currently a League conducting fellow with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, following two years as a League conducting fellow with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; Alondra de la Parra is founder and artistic director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas in New York City; Annunziata Tomaro is music director of the Phoenix Ensemble and since 2007 has been music director of the College-Conservatory of Music Concert Orchestra and the contemporary ensemble Café Momus in Cincinnati.
