The North Carolina Symphony, based in Raleigh, N.C., has announced that Principal Clarinet JIMMY GILMORE will retire at the end of this season after 41 years with the orchestra. The longest-tenured member of the NCS, Gilmore has played under four of its five music directors since his appointment in 1969. He has served as chairman of the Orchestra Committee and as president of Local 500 of the American Federation of Musicians. Gilmore is also a published writer whose articles have appeared in several periodicals including the North Carolina Symphony’s magazine Opus. His one-act play The Picture Album won second prize in North Carolina’s statewide Wachovia Playwrights Competition. He is currently working on a book about musical life, based in part on his experiences with the North Carolina Symphony.
