The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) has announced the appointment of WADE WEAST as dean of its School of Music, effective July 1. Since 2003 Weast has directed the School of Music at the University of South Florida, where he is also a professor in the Honors College. Previous teaching affiliations include the State University of New York at Fredonia, Mercyhurst College, the University of Buffalo, the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts, the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute, and the Sewanee (Tenn.) Summer Music Center. An accomplished instrumentalist (trumpet and cornet), Weast has performed with the New Haven Symphony, New York City Opera, American Symphony Orchestra, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, and on Broadway. He holds a doctorate from Stony Brook (N.Y.) University, a master’s from the Manhattan School of Music, and a bachelor’s degree in music from SUNY-Fredonia.
