This June, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra (Connecticut) is releasing its first commercial recording in more than 40 years, featuring William Walton’s Symphony No. 1 and Violin Concerto, with soloist Kurt Nikkanen. For the CD, on the Nimbus label, Music Director William Boughton leads both works, which were performed live at New Haven’s Woolsey Hall in 2009. The recording is part of a three-CD project planned to take place over four years, featuring Walton’s symphonic works and concertos utilizing original manuscripts from Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The CD will be sold at the orchestra’s website www.newhavensymphony.org and later this summer it will be available for download from iTunes. The last commercial recording released by the NHSO was for CBS Records in 1963, when Frank Brieff led a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 with then newly discovered “Blumine” movement. This is the orchestra’s first compact disk.
