In Friday’s (5/21) Detroit Free Press, Mark Stryker writes, “Coming soon to a neighborhood near you: the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The DSO is to announce eight free community concerts June 8-12 that will take the orchestra to Beverly Hills, Canton, Detroit, Warren and Flatrock. The week culminates with a free open house at the Max M. Fisher Music Center on June 12. Since the orchestra will be split into two ensembles to accommodate two performances on some days, music director Leonard Slatkin will share conducting duties with the young American guest conductor Kazem Abdullah. The concerts, which follow a week of similar free performance last fall, are part of the Slatkin and the DSO’s efforts to reach new audiences by taking the orchestra directly to the people, before inviting them to the DSO’s home at the Max.”
