Student musicians from Boston public high schools performed with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall on May 26 in the first of four concerts featuring the winners of the 2010 Fidelity FutureStage Music Competition. The competition is a part of a national arts education imitative begun by Fidelity Investments in 2006 for middle and high school public school students in Boston, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles. The Boston winners include vocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles with wide-ranging musical styles including classical, jazz, and bluegrass. The Chicago winners of the competition will perform as part of a Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert on June 7 at Symphony Center, and the Houston winners will perform at the city’s Miller Outdoor Theatre with the Houston Symphony on June 30. The Los Angeles FutureStage competition will take place this fall, with students competing for an opportunity to perform with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. On June 18, a 90-member ensemble from Renaissance Arts Academy—a Fidelity FutureStage school based in Los Angeles—will perform with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Earlier this year, Fidelity donated $500,000 worth of instruments to public school students in Boston, Chicago, Houston, and Los Angeles as part of the initiative.
