The Beijing Music Festival in China from October 11 to 31, 2010 will focus on the theme “From Baroque to New Contemporary.” The festival will include a focus on the anniversaries of Chopin and Schumann in three concerts of music featuring pianists Lang Lang, Yundi Li, Haochen Zhang, and Sa Chen; the world premiere of a piano concerto by Howard Shore, featuring Lang Lang; the world premiere of Farewell My Overlord, a newly commissioned opera; the Chinese premiere of Zhou Long’s opera Madame White Snake; and Handel’s Semele, said to be the first-ever performance of a Baroque opera in China. Performers at the festival will include the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the China Philharmonic Orchestra. The Toronto-based Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra will perform a program exploring the power of music and science. The founder and artistic director of the festival is Long Yu, who is also artistic director of the China Philharmonic.
