An Associated Press report posted Tuesday (6/8) on the WRAL website states, “Branford Marsalis is helping the North Carolina Symphony raise money with a performance that includes classical, blues, folk, gospel and his specialty—jazz. The saxophonist and band leader who lives in Durham will perform Tuesday night in Raleigh in a benefit for the symphony. All proceeds will support the orchestra’s statewide service and education programs. The symphony hopes to raise more than $100,000. The recession has caused financial problems for the symphony, which has reduced its operating budget by taking actions such as cutting salaries and postponing expensive guest artists. Marsalis is a board member of the North Carolina Symphony Society. Last year, he performed on the symphony’s first commercial recording as a soloist on one performance and with his quartet on another.”
