The Charlotte (N.C.) Symphony has announced the appointment of JACOMO RAFAEL BAIROS as assistant conductor, effective in mid-September. He is currently director of orchestras at Baltimore School for the Arts, where he works closely with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids program, and was recently named music director of the 2010 National Youth Orchestra Festival of Portugal. Born in Portugal and raised in Miami, Bairos began his career as an orchestral tubist. He first took up conducting during his time as principal tuba with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, subsequently studying with such conductors as Larry Rachleff, Leon Fleisher, Marin Alsop, and Gustav Meier. Bairos has led orchestras in Iceland, Malaysia, and Portugal, as well as the Bangor Symphony Orchestra in Maine.
