More than 25 musicians, staff, and friends of the boston Symphony Orchestra will participate in the 2010 Run to Tanglewood, a relay race across the state of Massachusetts from July 30 to July 1. The run is scheduled just before the start of the opening of the BSO’s season at Tanglewood, which begins on July 9 with a performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”) with soprano Layla Claire and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe. The relay run begins at the main entrance to Boston’s Symphony Hall at 1 p.m. and includes 30 five-mile legs, concluding on July 1 at the Tanglewood main gate. The run’s inaugural year was 2009, conceived by BSO bassist Todd Seeber and BSO violinist James Cooke, both longtime runners. This year’s run serves as a fundraiser for the BSO’s education programs including the Tanglewood-based Days in the Arts (DARTS), an eight-day program for middle school students, with runners securing donations for their participation in the run.
