Thursday (7/8) on the Post-Dispatch online (St. Louis), Sarah Bryan Miller reports, “The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra announced Thursday morning that it has received a commitment for a new $2 million endowment gift from the Mabel Dorn Reeder Foundation. The gift will fund the Mabel Dorn Reeder Honorary Chair. Although named orchestra chairs are relatively common, with most principal chairs and many others bearing the name of a donor, this one is different: Instead of being tied to a particular individual or section, it will float between worthy recipients. The Reeder Chair will be awarded, based on merit, for a period of five years to an SLSO musician who shows excellence both in artistry and leadership in the orchestra. It can go to any tenured player, including those who occupy a named chair. A one-time $10,000 stipend goes with it at the start of each term, to be used in professional development.”
