In Wednesday’s (7/21) New York Times, Robin Pogrebin reports, “The Open Society Institute, founded by George Soros, [pictured], has awarded $11 million to 70 small and mid-sized New York City cultural organizations, the institute is set to announce on Wednesday. The two-year grants, to be managed by the nonprofit Fund for the City of New York, will provide arts groups with general operating support. ‘General support money is the hardest money to come by,’ Mary McCormick, the president of the fund, said. ‘When money is so tight, it is what gives cultural groups some breathing room.’ The grants range from $65,000 to $250,000 for organizations with budgets of $75,000 to $7 million. Those selected will receive half of their money next week, Ms. McCormick said, and the remainder in June 2011. Groups in all five boroughs were evaluated on artistic excellence in dance, theater or music as well as their education programs. Among the recipients are the Mark Morris Dance Group, Ballet Hispanico, the Epic Theater Ensemble and the New York Youth Symphony.”
