The Buffalo Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony are among the orchestras that have recently announced new recordings. On August 30, the Buffalo Philharmonic’s performance of Marcel Tyberg’s Symphony No. 3, led by Music Director JoAnn Falletta, will be released on the Naxos label. It is the first recorded performance of the work by the composer, who died in Auschwitz in 1944. The symphony was one of several scores rediscovered in 2005, after Dr. Henry Mihich, a doctor based in Buffalo, brought the manuscripts to Falletta. The Cleveland Orchestra has released a Deutsche Grammophon CD of its February 2010 Severance Hall performances of Wagner’s Wedendonck-Lieder, with soprano Measha Brueggergosman, led by Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. Also included on the recording are the Overture to Rienzi; the Act I Prelude/Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde; Lohengrin’s Act I and Act III Preludes; the Act I Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg; and “The Ride of the Valkyries” from Die Walküre. The San Francisco Symphony will soon release the final recording in its Mahler cycle, led by Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas and featuring mezzo-soprano Susan Graham in the Rückert-Lieder and baritone Thompson Hampson in Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and selections from Des Knaben Wunderhorn. The recording on the orchestra’s own SFS Media label—set for CD release on September 14 and at iTunes on August 31—comes from performances at Davies Symphony Hall in May 2007 and September 2009. Other upcoming Mahler events for the orchestra include performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 at the Lucerne Festival and in Turin, Italy, in September; the third season of its Keeping Score PBS television series, scheduled to air in spring 2011, will also be devoted to Mahler.
