A post Monday (8/9) on the blog site Critics and Monsters reports, “David Afkham from Germany is taking home the first-ever young conductors award of the prestigious Salzburg Festival, prevailing over 80 other aspiring maestros, the jury announced on Monday. Afkham, whose father was worn in Iran, is currently assistant conductor at the London Symphony Orchestra. … The jury said in Salzburg that the young artist ‘convinced them with his talent and his ability to lead an orchestra to first-class musical performances,’ when he conducted the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon in the final stage of the competition. As the winner, Afkham not only takes home a 15,000-euro (20,000- dollar) cash prize, but also gets to lead a concert of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Salzburg on Saturday.”
