Oregon’s Eugene Symphony has announced six additions to its playing roster, effective this fall. SARAH VEINS, principal trumpet, holds a bachelor’s degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, a master’s from Temple University, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Oregon. MICHAEL HANKINS, second trumpet, has completed coursework at Portland State University and has, like Veins, performed with numerous orchestras in Oregon and elsewhere. MIRIAM ENGLISH WARD, assistant principal viola, holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, Peabody Conservatory, and University of Wisconsin-Madison, respectively; currently president of the Oregon Viola Society, she performs with the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera, and the viola-piano duo Nocturna, and teaches at Oregon’s Lewis & Clark College and Multnomah University. ANGELA FURTWÄNGLER, named to the viola section, has performed with several local groups including the Oregon Symphony, as well as with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and the Detroit, Toledo, Ann Arbor, Vermont, and Madison (Wis.) symphony orchestras; Furtwängler received her bachelor’s degree from the Munich Musikhochschule and subsequently earned master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the University of Wisconsin. ESKA LASKUS, a new member of the first violin section, is director of music admissions and recruitment at the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance; a graduate of the University of Miami with a master’s in violin performance from Arizona State University, she has performed with several organizations in Arizona and Florida. SASHA CHANDLER has been named to the second violin section, with a one-year appointment as assistant principal second; she holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon, and has performed with such organizations as the Eugene-based Oregon Mozart Players, California’s Eureka and Redwood symphony orchestras, and the Corvallis (Ore.) Symphony Orchestra.
