In Sunday’s (8/15) Plain Dealer (Cleveland), Zachary Lewis writes, “After spending the last several weeks at Blossom Music Center, regaling listeners in Northeast Ohio, the Cleveland Orchestra is preparing to take its special show on the road, for a nearly two-week tour of Europe. The journey, beginning Tuesday, will take the group to two of the continent’s most famous music festivals and mark the ninth such trip undertaken by the orchestra with music director Franz Welser-Möst. … For the orchestra, all tours such as this one—including nine concerts over 13 days in four countries—amount to a big, big injection of effort.” The tour launches from the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland and includes “a three-concert stay at Switzerland’s Lucerne Festival, where the orchestra holds a biennial residency and last visited in 2008.” In addition to works by Bruckner, Schubert, Berg, Debussy, and Strauss, the orchestra will perform a world premiere: “ ‘Woven Dreams’ by Toshio Hosokawa, is the fifth co-commission by the Cleveland Orchestra, the Lucerne Festival and Carnegie Hall in an ongoing series underwritten by Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche. Clevelanders will hear the piece next year at Severance Hall.”
