The Houston-based River Oaks Chamber Orchestra has announced a new initiative, Pro-Am Chamber Music Program, for adult amateurs who used to play an instrument. Former instrumentalists who sign up for the program will attend monthly rehearsals and coaching sessions throughout the 2010-11 season, with coaching provided by ROCO musicians in groupings such as trios, quartets, and quintets. No auditions are required; participants are charged tuition of $125 after being assigned to a group. The final event in the program will be a concert/jam session in spring 2011. ROCO, founded in 2005 by oboist Alecia Lawyer, is a 40-member professional ensemble that performs a mix of well-known and newly commissioned works, led by guest conductors.
