The website Guidestar recently released “The Effect of the Economy on the Nonprofit Sector: A June 2010 Survey.” The study, which can be accessed at Guidestar’s website, examines public charities and private foundations during the first five months of 2010. Among the areas studied are changes in number of employees and donors; changes in contributions; increased reliance on volunteers; and impacts on program services. According to the study, approximately 40 percent those surveyed reported a drop in contributions, compared to the same period a year earlier, with another 28 percent reporting that contributions were about the same, and the remaining 30 percent reporting increased contributions during the period studied. Guidestar, founded in 1994, gathers and publicizes information about U.S. nonprofit organizations.
