On September 3, students from California’s Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Ensembles will participate in “Get Your Play On: Putting String Instruments in Peoples’ Hands” at the Airport Stadium 12 movie-theater lobby in Santa Rosa. The event, held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., is part of the ArtsSonoma Festival ’10, a countywide multi-disciplinary festival of music, visual art, and dance being held from August 28 to September 12. A quartet from the Santa Rosa Symphony Youth Orchestra will perform arrangements of movie music in the theater lobby; members of the Santa Rosa Symphony and staff will offer moviegoers the opportunity to handle a string instrument and offer open-string and other simple instruction. The orchestra said in a statement that the goals of the project are to get moviegoers curious about classical music and to “show young people that this music is not out of reach” and inspire parents to help their children obtain music instruction.
