The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City has announced the appointment of GEORGE MATHEW as artistic director and conductor for its 2010 New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace. The Singapore-born Indian conductor has previously led concerts at Carnegie Hall benefiting such humanitarian causes as the conflict in Darfur, the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, and pediatric AIDS. He holds a postgraduate diploma in conducting from the Manhattan School of Music, where his teachers included Zdenek Macal, Sergiu Comissiona, and George Manahan. Mathew graduated magna cum laude from Amherst College and pursued studies in conducting and historical performance at the University of Minnesota (M.M.) and Duke University.
