The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will participate in its first-ever residency in Cuba from October 5 to 9 in Havana. The residency will include concerts featuring the JLCO performing with Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés and other Cuban musicians; workshops; and a Jazz for Young People concert. Later in October, Jazz at Lincoln Center will produce a four-day Afro-Cuban Jazz Celebration in New York City, where Chucho Valdés and the Afro-Cuban Messengers will perform selections from his new album Chucho’s Steps. Valdés’s New York concerts and October U.S. tour represent his first appearances in the United States in seven years. Valdés is the son of Bebo Valdés (b. 1918), the Cuban pianist, bandleader, composer, and arranger.
