The Vancouver (B.C.) Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of PIERRE SIMARD as assistant conductor; he will make his VSO debut at the orchestra’s October 27 concert featuring Canadian pop vocalist Chantal Kreviazuk. Simard is artistic director of the Vancouver Island Symphony and Québec’s Orchestre symphonique de Drummondville, and served previously as associate conductor of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in Alberta. He has guest conducted the Milwaukee and Hot Springs (Ark.) Festival orchestras, as well as such Canadian ensembles as Montréal’s Orchestre Métropolitain, Québec’s Les Violons du Roy, and the Toronto, Victoria, Hamilton, Okanagan, Trois-Rivières, and National Arts Centre orchestras. Simard holds a master’s degree in conducting from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and is the recipient of five prizes from the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal.
