The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids afterschool music program has received 131 instruments and 50 music stands from Music & Arts, a Maryland music retailer. Delivery of the instruments and stands took place on October 1 at Lockerman Bundy Elementary School in West Baltimore, with BSO Music Director Marin Alsop on hand to help distribute the instruments to younger students. The donation completed Music & Arts’s $50,000 in-kind pledge of support to the El Sistema-inspired OrchKids program, a year-round afterschool music program providing music education, instruments, and mentorship to children in Baltimore City neighborhoods. During the 2010-11 school year, OrchKids serves more than 200 pre-K through fifth-grade students at the Lockerman Bundy school. Under OrchKids Director of Artistic Program Development Dan Trahey, students receive classroom music instruction twice weekly and in after-school sessions four days a week from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
