The Alabama Symphony Orchestra, based in Birmingham, has appointed FAWZI HAIMOR music director and conductor of the newly formed Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra. Also announced by the ASO were two administrative appointments: VINCENT CARBONE, artistic director, and BRITNEY ELLIOTT, director of marketing and communications. Haimor has served as assistant conductor in the Opera and Theater Department of Indiana University, and as assistant to several conductors including Robert Spano, Uri Segal, David Effron, Arthur Fagen, and Cliff Colnot. Raised in the Middle East and California, he holds bachelor’s degree in music and in neurobiology, physiology and behavior; a master’s degree in conducting from the University of California-Davis; and a master’s in instrumental conducting from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Vincent Carbone, the ASO’s new artistic director, served previously as manager of artistic operations at Chicago’s Music of the Baroque. He has also worked at the Omaha Symphony and at Aspen Music Festival and School. Carbone holds a bachelor’s degree in performing arts management with a minor in business administration from DePaul University. Britney Elliott worked previously in the healthcare field, most recently in the Birmingham chapter of the American Heart Association, where she had served as senior development specialist of the Heart Ball since 2006. She received a degree in marketing from the University of Alabama in 1995.
