The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has announced the retirement, effective October 1, of JOSEPH GUASTAFESTE, its principal bassist for the past 49 years. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., educated at The Juilliard School, Guastafeste was appointed to the CSO by Fritz Reiner in 1961 following stints at the New Orleans and Dallas symphony orchestras. An onstage retirement ceremony is planned for later this season.
