The Lexington Symphony in Massachusetts and the Nashua Symphony in New Hampshire have announced that they will combine forces for two performances of Mahler’s Eighth Symphony (“Symphony of a Thousand”) this November, joined by the Nashua Symphony Chorus, the New World Chorale, Boston Children’s Chorus, and eight vocal soloists. Jonathan McPhee, music director of both orchestras, will lead the concerts on November 20 at Cary Hall in Lexington and November 21 at Keefe Memorial Auditorium in Nashua. Both orchestras state that rather than perform the work in a space such as Boston’s Symphony Hall, they preferred to present it in their own communities, where many audience members might not typically get the chance to hear it. A press release about the concert stated that it is highly unusual for two symphony orchestras to combine forces to produce a performance of Mahler’s gigantic Eighth Symphony, as is being done for these concerts.
