The New Haven Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut has announced the launch of the New Haven Symphony Contemporary Youth Orchestra, an ensemble for high-school musicians focusing on contemporary music. The orchestra is meant to complement offerings students receive in their schools and youth orchestras; repertoire for the ensemble will emphasize multicultural, ethnic, improvisational, tonal and atonal, World, jazz, pop, and rock music by living American composers, who will work with the musicians. The group will meet weekly for rehearsals from January to May 2011, and will be mentored by NHSO musicians and Music Director William Boughton. Auditions will take place on November 7 and 14. The inaugural concert is set to take place on March 20.
