In honor of its 75th-anniversary season, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra has released a five-CD set, The BPO at 75, on the Beau Fleuve label, as well as a 75th-anniversary calendar that runs from October 2010 to September 2011 and notes important performance dates, soloist debuts, and other BPO history. On November 11, the orchestra will release The BPO Celebrates The First 75 Years, a 120-page coffeetable book published by Buffalo Heritage Unlimited, chronicling the BPO from its origins as a Works Progress Administration orchestra providing work to Buffalo musicians to the present day. The five-CD set includes Sarah Vaughan singing Gershwin songs, led by Michael Tilson Thomas; soloists Glenn Gould and Emanuel Ax in works by Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, led by Josef Krips and Julius Rudel; Semyon Bychkov leading Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony; and current Music Director JoAnn Falletta leading Schreker’s “Prelude to a Dream” from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade, with concertmaster Michael Ludwig as soloist.
