Tuesday (11/16) on the UK news site Wales Online, Karen Price writes, “American composer Philip Glass is writing a new chamber opera for Music Theatre Wales. The world famous musician approached the Cardiff-based company with his plans for a new opera based on Franz Kafka’s short story, The Trial, and asked if they would like to stage it. MTW are now due to premiere the piece in 2013 as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations. It is the latest development in a long-standing relationship between Glass and MTW, which dates back more than 20 years. … Meanwhile, MTW is currently recording Glass’ opera, In the Penal Colony, for the composer’s own music label, Orange Mountain Music, for future release. … The Trial was first published in 1925. One of Kafka’s best-known works, it tells the story of a man arrested and prosecuted by a remote, inaccessible authority, with the nature of his crime never revealed either to him or the reader.”
