A report in Friday’s (12/3) News and Observer (Raleigh, North Carolina) states, “A Chapel Hill couple who are longtime supporters of the N.C. Symphony have created a fund to support musical performances on a more intimate scale, the symphony announced Thursday. Jaroslav and Barbara Hulka’s gift of $250,000 will be used to advance chamber music programs and other small ensemble work. It will also encourage musicians in the Raleigh-based orchestra to explore performances in new venues and to include jazz and other contemporary music in their programs. The Hulkas have been season ticketholders and contributors to the N.C. Symphony for several decades. Jaroslav Hulka, an obstetrician and gynecologist who worked at UNC-Chapel Hill until he retired in 1996, serves on the N.C. Symphony Society Board. Barbara Hulka specialized in public health and preventive medicine and epidemiology at UNC-CH until retiring in 2001. Symphony vice president Scott Freck said in a statement that the gift will broaden ‘our ability to take music into nontraditional, even surprising venues, whether they be art galleries, retirement homes or restaurants.’ ”
