To mark its 60th birthday in March 2011, the Southeast Iowa Orchestra will join area restaurants to try to break the Guinness record for “World’s Largest Orchestral Birthday Party.” On March 8 at more than 100 participating restaurants in fourteen counties in southeast Iowa, the orchestra will distribute more than 20,000 free tickets to its concerts on March 19 and 20. At each restaurant, musicians from the orchestra will be on hand to provide live music, and the restaurants will offer all customers a free dessert. Other musicians throughout the region have been invited to register to join the performances; orchestra board members and volunteers are currently signing up area restaurants for participation in Burlington, Ft. Madison, Mt. Pleasant, Washington, Ottumwa, Fairfield, and surrounding communities. The orchestra has begun the process of applying for certification by the Guinness Book of World Records.
