The Oberlin Conservatory of Music has announced that it will send its orchestra on an eight-concert tour of China and Singapore from December 25, 2010 to January 6, 2011. In China, the Oberlin Orchestra will perform in Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Wuhan, Chongqing, and Beijing at the invitation of the Beijing Concert Hall Corporation, the country’s leading concert presenter; Oberlin is the first U.S. conservatory to receive such an invitation. Professor of Conducting Timothy Weiss will lead the orchestra in performances described as “in the style of the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s concerts,” to include Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Johann Strauss’s Tritsch-Tratsch Polka, Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, and two Chinese compositions, Great Song of the Flag and Yaozu Suite. Violinist Lee-Chin Siow, an Oberlin alumna, will join the orchestra in performances of Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending and Ravel’s Tzigane. The Oberlin Orchestra made its first China tour in 2005 to five cities in Northern China, as well as in Shanghai and Beijing. In 2009, the Oberlin Conservatory of Music was among the individual artists and organizations awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Obama.
