The Burlington-based Vermont Youth Orchestra Association has announced the appointment of JEFFREY DOMOTO as music director designate. He will begin conducting the VYOA’s Vermont Youth Orchestra and Vermont Youth Sinfonia in early February 2011 and move to Vermont permanently in March. Domoto was previously on the conducting staffs of New York City Opera and Minnesota Opera, and he has worked with young musicians at such institutions as the Sewanee (Tenn.) Music Festival, the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, and youth orchestras in Nanjing and Guangzhou, China. He has also guest conducted the New Jersey, Atlanta, and Lafayette (Ind.) symphonies; the Minnesota, Saint Paul Chamber, and National Arts Centre orchestras; the Symphony of Southeast Texas and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic; Russia’s Diaghilev Festival; and China’s Nanjing Philharmonic Orchestra, where he has served as principal guest conductor. Domoto has been featured in the League of American Orchestras’ Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington, a master’s from Manhattan School of Music, and is a 1999 graduate of the conducting fellowship program at Yale School of Music. Domoto began his musical career as trombonist with the Emerald City Brass Quintet in his native Seattle.
