Chicago’s Harris Theater for Music and Dance will celebrate Joan W. Harris with Fanfare for an Uncommon Woman: A Celebration of Joan W. Harris on Her Birthday, a gala event at the theater on March 9. Trumpeter Stephen Burns will lead a performance of Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman to begin the tribute, which will also feature performances by violinist Pinchas Zukerman, soprano Renée Fleming, the Emerson String Quartet, cellist David Finckel, pianist Wu Han, and the Escher String Quartet. The 75-minute concert will be preceded by a champagne reception and followed by a dinner on the Pritzker Pavilion stage for 200 of Harris’s family, friends, and colleagues. Harris is the primary benefactor of the Harris Theater, which opened in 2003 and is home to 35 resident companies, including the Joffrey Ballet, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and Chicago Opera Theater. Harris has served on the boards of numerous arts organizations, including the League of American Orchestras, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival and School, Juilliard School, and Chicago Opera Theater.
