The New York City-based International Contemporary Ensemble has received a $340,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon foundation to launch ICElab, an initiative that will support collaborations between ICE musicians and 24 emerging composers over the next four years. The project will be built around a series of what are known as incubation residencies with the ensemble, which replace the conventional commissioning model of composition. The first three composers announced for the project are Mario Diaz de León, Steve Lehman, and Nathan Davis, whose works ICE will perform at free concerts at Manhattan’s Le Poisson Rouge club in March, April, and May 2011. Six new ICElab composers will be announced for the 2012 cycle in early March 2011.
