The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra & Music School has received a $67,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation to form a strategic plan. The Philharmonic and Music School, based in East Providence, will begin the strategic-planning process immediately, which will be led by the Boston-based consulting and research group TDC, with support from Obalil Associates, a Rhode Island-based firm that offers capacity-building services for businesses. Executive Director David Beauchesne stated that the strategic plan will “be about moving both the orchestra and school forward programmatically, while grappling with fiscal challenges created by the struggling regional economy. We will solicit broad community input and hope to create a plan that will help us meet the needs of our communities and region.” The Rhode Island Philharmonic, now in its 66th year, offers nine classical programs per season at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence, as well as four 6:30 p.m. rush-hour concerts, two pops concerts, and four family concerts. The Music School, based at the Carter Center for Music Education and Performance in East Providence, serves approximately 14,500 children, youth, and adults with lessons, classes, ensembles, and community-engagement programs.
