In Thursday’s (3/10) Indianapolis Star, Jay Harvey writes, “New music director Krzysztof Urbanski will put his personal stamp on the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s 2011-12 season through well-known masterpieces and music of his homeland, Poland. The orchestra’s 81st season will open with his debut as the ISO’s seventh music director, during a weekend (Sept. 16-18) featuring the Classical Series launch as well as the season-opening gala. Urbanski will conduct an all-Russian program featuring superstar Garrick Ohlsson as soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor. Time for Three will supplement the program for the gala Sept. 18. … The season will feature the world premieres of ‘Mass’ by Stephen Hough (who will appear in his better-known persona as piano soloist in a Mendelssohn concerto), April 6 and 7, and ‘Percussion Concerto II’ by Joseph Schwantner (with ISO percussionists as soloists), Nov. 11 and 12. … Urbanski will be on the Hilbert Circle Theatre podium for six weekends of concerts, including music of his countrymen—Henryk Gorecki and Wojciech Kilar (Sept. 23 and 24), Karol Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No. 2 (March 16 and 17), another piece by Kilar (March 30 and 31) and Krzysztof Penderecki’s ‘Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima’ (May 31-June 2)—and a Ravel-Shostakovich program May 18 and 19.”
