In Tuesday’s (3/15) Plain Dealer (Cleveland, Ohio), Donald Rosenberg writes about the recipients of the 2011 Avery Fisher Career Grants: violinist Caroline Goulding, pianist Benjamin Hochman, and pianist Chu-Fang Huang. The awards were announced at a ceremony on March 14 at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. “Each winner receives a stipend of $25,000. Their performances at Monday’s ceremony were taped by New York’s classical music station, WQXR 106.9 FM, and will be aired on the station at 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 30. Their performances also were captured on DVDs that the winners can use in publicizing their work. Since the Career Grants were established in 1976, 121 musicians have been awarded stipends. Up to five grants may be given each year to U.S. citizens and permanent U.S. residents. Michigan-born Goulding, 18, is a resident of Cleveland Heights; Israeli-born Hochman, 31 on March 22, lives in New York; Chinese-born Huang, 28, also resides in New York. The final selection of recipients is made by an executive committee, which this year included pianist Emanuel Ax, violinist Pamela Frank, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Juilliard School president Joseph W. Polisi, and many other prominent musicians and administrators.”
